Nielsen Book, the leading supplier of bibliographic information worldwide, announced today that the number of new books published in the UK in 2009 was 133,224, an increase of 3.2% over the previous year’s total of 129,057. This is the highest single year figure within the last 15 years.
Nielsen Book runs the ISBN Agency for UK & Ireland, collects and aggregates English language book data from publishers in 70 countries, provides the leading transaction service and runs the world’s largest continuous retail sales monitoring and analysis service. The company is therefore able to offer an unrivalled service to the book industry worldwide and report on book production figures and market analysis.
The new book production figures have also increased the overall number of bibliographic records held on the Nielsen Book database to 10.4m globally and 5.8m for UK & Ireland published titles. This includes in-print, print-on-demand, e-books and out-of-print titles. The increases can be accounted for in part by growth in print-on-demand (POD) and digital product, which we expect to continue to increase in the future.
Nielsen Book has also recently released the latest UK and Irish Book Sales Trends for 2009.
