Redressing the Balance: Getting Historically Under-Represented Composers and Contemporary Environmental Concerns into Library Stock

A Performing Arts Librarian describes recent efforts to improve the Whittaker Library’s stock of music by contemporary and historically significant women and composers of colour, and the challenges of sourcing music addressing the climate crisis.
Our speaker:
Dr Karen McAulay is a librarian and postdoctoral researcher at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Karen has been on the Executive of IAML(UK & Ireland) as Communications Chair, and has spoken and published widely both about music librarianship and her Scottish music research. Her second monograph – A Social History of Amateur Music-Making and Scottish National Identity: Scotland’s Printed Music, 1880-1951 – will hopefully be published this year, subject to revision and editing processes. In her research, she has encountered a number of forgotten women musicians, without particularly looking for them! They have undoubtedly influenced her concerns as a librarian.
