Cutting our cloth: coping with budget shocks and lockdowns at LSBU

How do you respond to a catastrophic budget cut? And what happens when the library is closed during a global pandemic? LSBU faced these two challenges in recent years and had to adapt its approach and processes for book acquisition with a focus on evidence-based purchasing and e-compliance for core items on reading lists.

Stephen Grace is Deputy Head of Library and Learning Resources at London South Bank University, where he oversees the teams responsible for acquisitions and reading lists, e-resources, systems, archives and scholarly communications. Despite a keen interest in how technology can help meet the needs of library users he retains a fascination with the physical book, which he nourishes by buying and making books.
