The use of well-structured, consistent metadata enhances library workflows beyond traditional cataloguing. Effective metadata is crucial to ensure all resources that a library buys/acquires can be found, identified, selected and obtained by library-users. Ultimately, good metadata helps libraries to get value-for-money from their content budget expenditure. We will also showcase some tools and techniques for managing metadata.

Will Peaden is Chair of the Metadata & Discovery Group and works as Head of Content and Discovery at Coventry University. Will is keen to promote metadata and cataloguing to colleagues across the wider information profession.
Fran Frenzel works as Metadata Analyst in the Metadata Team at LSE Library. She is an advocate for the value of professional metadata work and high- quality metadata for content discovery and management, and open metadata.
Concetta La Spada works for Cambridge University Press where, as Senior Metadata Librarian, she uses her knowledge of cataloguing and metadata to improve the quality of the metadata supplied to customers and third parties.
Ceilan Hunter-Green is a Metadata & Discovery Manager at the University of Leeds Libraries where she leads on inclusive metadata work within the team.
Jenny Wright is the Chief Metadata Officer for BDS, a cataloguing agency based in the UK. Metadata, and the standards which we use to manage metadata creation and exchange, support all library functions.
Gail Beadnell works as Head of Resource Description at the Bodleian Libraries, University of Oxford where she manages a team of cataloguers who create, import and enrich bibliographic metadata for materials obtained through purchase, donation and Legal Deposit.

What does MDG do?

• MDG is actively engaged in the development and maintenance of metadata standards, including RDA, seeking to work in partnership with the organisations and groups responsible for their advancement.
• MDG unites all those with an interest in metadata and discovery, including colleagues working in the cultural sector, business and commerce and the publishing industry.
• MDG works with regional cataloguing and metadata special interest groups to provide training and networking opportunities as well as a biennial conference.
• MDG publishes an open access online journal Catalogue and Index.
• MDG advises CILIP on matters concerning bibliographic control.
