Nielsen Book operates BookScan, the world’s largest market measurement and analysis service, which tracks retail sales data in: UK, Ireland, US, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Italy, Spain and Denmark. Transactional data is collected at the point of sale from 33,500 retailers and provided to publishers, booksellers and the media worldwide.

During 2009 books behaved very differently in the key countries in which Nielsen BookScan measures sales, for this release we are only looking at some of the major English language book markets.
